Add habanero powder to your dishes slowly to avoid over spicing them with this extremely hot chile pepper! A single pepper added to a pot of chili is enough to give it a nice little kick! Because of this extreme heat habaneros are only used as a culinarily spice and never stuffed or incorporated into food in large pieces.

Substitutions: For every whole fresh habanero pepper called for in a recipe substitute a scant teaspoon of our habanero powder. Whole fresh Habanero peppers weigh approximately 6 grams or about 1/5 of a ounce. Whole dried habanero peppers weigh a little more than 1 gram each or less than half the weight of a penny. When ground a whole pepper is a little less than a teaspoon of habanero powder, but this volume varies slightly based on the peppers and how they are ground.

 

Habanero powder is a common ingredient in fiery salsas. Its citrusy flavors especially complement salsas (and other recipes) containing containing fruits such as mangos. Theses same citrus flavors in the habanero also complement the fruity flavors of many wines making them the perfect chile to add intense heat to sauces and marinades containing fruity wines.

About Habanero Powder


Habanero Powder is made by finally grinding dried habanero peppers. These extremely hot peppers come in a variety of colors, the most Habanero Chile Peppercommon are green, orange and red. Our Habanero powder is made from the more common orange peppers and has a bright fruity-citrus flavor underneath the searing heat. The peppers themselves are small and irregularly shaped.

Habanero peppers were originally grown in the Caribbean and Mexico's Yucatan peninsula where there exceptional heat, which can be about one thousand times hotter than a jalapeno, is appreciated. Habaneros are unique among widely available chile peppers because they are a variety of Capsicum chinense, most other sweet and hot peppers are varieties of Capsicum annum. This species name is misleading sounding as if the Habanero originated in china, which the original namer thought was true, but of course,  all chile peppers of the genus Capsicum, originated in the new world. The common name, Habanero, is the name of a area in the Caribbean where this extremely spicy chile could have originated, Havana. Habanero literally means Havana in Spanish.

 

 

Habanero chile peppers are also known as Scotch Bonnets. These chiles are green when immature, ripening into a variety of colors from red to brown, yellow, white and the common orange that can be found ground into a powder, fresh and as seedling at nurseries.
